Bentleyville Man Posthumously Receives Purple Heart:

The long wait for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Edwin Molesky is over. The World War II veteran was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart in a ceremony at Mon Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Donora, where Molesky is buried with his wife of 58 years, Louise.

New Garvey Flagpole Honors Veteran:

The American flag is again flying over the grounds at Garvey Manor after the Baker family of Hollidaysburg donated a flagpole to replace the home’s broken one. Donated in memory of the late Thomas G. “Tom” Baker, family members joined Garvey Manor residents and community members as a new flag was hoisted into the air.

Six Veteran Organizations Receive Grants In Scranton:

The City of Scranton showed some appreciation to veterans by awarding several grants to benefit programs geared toward veterans. $85,500 in grant money will be split among six veteran organizations in Scranton to help them with everything from upkeep to providing services.

Operation Vet NOW Fallen Heroes Tribute and Veterans Suicide Prevention Outreach Event Returns:

On Aug. 3, Operation Vet NOW Inc. (OVN) brings the annual OVN Fallen Heroes Ride & Veterans Village back to Greensburg for the sixth year. This year’s ride will honor three veterans from Pennsylvania, of the 19 soldiers killed in action in Mogadishu, Somalia, Oct. 3, 1993, during Operation Gothic Serpent.

Battle Creek VA’s recreation therapy service has partnered with West Michigan Sail for its third season of therapeutic sailing activities on Lake Michigan. The goal of the aquatic adventure is to help provide veterans with temporary relief from the effects of PTSD, as well as introduce new and enjoyable life activities.

PA Department Of Corrections To Hold Job Fair:

Join the PA Department of Corrections Aug. 13 and 14 from 3-7 p.m. at a joint on-site job fair, with positions available at SCI Frackville and SCI Mahanoy. The event will be held at the Frackville location. Be prepared to submit applications, and bring two forms of ID.

Pinchot Park Poker Paddle To Benefit Wounded Veterans:

This event, scheduled for Aug. 4 from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at Gifford Pinchot State Park, calls for participants to paddle around in kayaks or other paddle vessels to five different beaches. Participants are dealt a card at each station. Proceeds from the $30 entry fee benefit the ice hockey program of Players Using Competition Helping Others Grow, Inc. (PUCHOG).
