Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center Residents Receive Gifts Of Plants:

Volunteers with Scranton Tomorrow and Neighborworks NEPA took their green thumbs to the Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center, Scranton, where they potted more than 150 spider plants to gift to the residents. The effort was part of the community's outreach to help veterans overcome feelings of isolation brought on by the pandemic.

DMVA Honors Certified Nursing Assistants At PSSH For Their Selfless Care Of Veterans:

Today, certified nursing assistants (CNAs) at the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home (PSSH) in Erie were honored for their selfless care of veterans in recognition of National Nursing Assistants Week June 16-22, 2022. The PSSH is one of six veterans homes operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). The DMVA is honoring its nearly 500 CNAs who care for our veterans and their families throughout all of its six veterans homes.

Pennsylvania Soldiers' And Sailors' Home Hosts Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony:

Flag Day took on even greater meaning at the Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Erie as representatives of the facility inducted two veterans into their Hall of Fame. The salute to veterans was part of its celebration of Veterans Homes Week.

Pennsylvania Air Guard Firefighters Train At Joint Base Andrews:

Five firefighters from the 193rd Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron recently completed joint training with their active-duty counterparts at the 316th Civil Engineer Squadron at Joint Base Andrews, MD. The goal of this training was to strengthen the relationship between Air National Guardsmen and their active-duty counterparts, while fulfilling mandatory yearly readiness certifications.

Pennsylvania National Guard Fills Key Roles In Cyber Shield 2022:

A team of about 10 Pennsylvania National Guard cyber and computer security specialists recently participated in Cyber Shield 2022, the Department of Defense’s largest unclassified cyber defense exercise involving approximately 800 National Guard cyber specialists as well as law enforcement, legal, government and corporate partners from across the country. The Pennsylvania National Guard members are part of the state’s Defensive Cyber Operations Element.

Local Trout Unlimited Chapter Plants More Than 30 Trees In Snitz Creek Conservation Effort:

Members of the Doc Fritchey chapter of Trout Unlimited recently gathered on the east bank of Snitz Creek to plant more than 30 tree saplings. The chapter planted the saplings as part of their conservation efforts on the property, located in close proximity to Ft. Indiantown Gap.

Of the communities in Pennsylvania with populations of at least 25,000, Altoona has the highest share of military veterans. There are about 34,000 civilians 18 and older residing in Altoona, and 9.4% of them are veterans.

Fundraiser Benefits Efforts To Provide Service Dogs For Veterans:

For the second year, North Strabane Township, PA resident Bri Hall organized a fundraiser to benefit nonprofits that help provide service dogs for veterans. Her efforts resulted in a $64,000 donation to Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Inc.

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging announced the launch of two new online resources: a new webpage focused on the growing problem of financial exploitation of older adults, and an elder abuse awareness web-based training module. The resources were introduced on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Application Deadline Extended To Dec. 31, 2022 For Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program:

The Pennsylvania departments of Revenue and Aging announced that the deadline for older and disabled Pennsylvanians to apply for rebates on rent and property taxes paid in 2021 has been extended from June 30 to Dec. 31, 2022. Rebates on property taxes and rent paid in 2021 are set to begin on July 1.
